Multiple Myeloma: Commonest Form Of Blood Cancer

Multiple Myeloma is the commonest form of cancer of blood cells, accounting for 15 per cent of all blood cancers. There are about 2500 new cases per annum in the UK, giving rise to 10-15,000 patients with the condition at any one time. The overall incidence is rising, and is higher in Afro-Caribbeans.Multiple myeloma is treatable, but it cannot be considered a curable condition.
Types of Myeloma
There is really only one main type of myeloma, but in different people, the cancerous plasma cells make different antibodies. Doctors more often call these antibodies 'immunoglobulins'. In each case of myeloma, only one type of immunoglobulin is overproduced, but this varies from patient to patient. There are 5 basic immunoglobulins - A, G, M, D and E. In myeloma, the commonest one that is overproduced is IgG and the rarest IgE.
Controlling your symptoms
Even if it is not possible to get your myeloma into remission, you can have treatment to help control the symptoms it causes. This may be mild chemotherapy to damp it down. Or you may have radiotherapy to any trouble spots in your bones. Bisphosphonates can also be used to try to slow down the progress of the myeloma. And to reduce the levels of calcium in your blood if this is too high. Your doctor may suggest a treatment called plasma pharesis if the level of abnormal immunoglobulin protein is too high in your blood. Too much protein in the blood can make it too thick and plasma pharesis will take out the excess protein.
Smouldering myeloma
You may also hear the term 'smouldering myeloma'. This is a condition that is much the same as MGUS. The only difference is that the immunoglobulin levels are slightly higher than in MGUS. But they are not rising and the condition is usually stable for long periods of time. There is a risk that the condition will speed up and develop into full blown multiple myeloma.
How does one develop myeloma?
The cause of myeloma is not known. It is not inherited and it is not contagious. In common with other blood cancers there is an increased incidence in patients exposed to radiation.Organic-chemical exposure may increase incidence, but there are no clear data.A recent report suggests that multiple myeloma patients have a higher incidence of infection (up to 80 per cent or more) by a human herpes virus (HHV8) than do normal subjects (up to 25 per cent); these reports are unconfirmed.

Everything You Need to Know about Leukimia

Leukemia is generally considered and known as blood cancer, where as if considered in its real terms leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells and the platelets. These platelets actually help blood to clot. Additionally when the white blood cells reduce in amount they actually leave the immune system unlocked for attack and the patient sometimes die of a very usual illness like flu. In general the deficiency of normal white cells impairs the body's ability to struggle against infections. A shortage of platelets results in bruising and easy bleeding whenever there is a need of clot to stop the flow of blood. All kinds of various acute or chronic diseases of leukemia are dangerous. Acute leukemia being a swiftly succeeding disease affects typically cells that are embryonic or primitive (which means the cells that have not yet fully developed or differentiated from the others). These not fully formed cells thus cannot achieve their standard utility. These cells are described as "nonfunctional" because they do not work like normal cells. They also number out the usual normal healthy cells in the marrow, resulting in a decrease in the number of new healthy normal cells made in the marrow. These later results in low red cell counts which is a typical form of anemia. On the other hand chronic leukemia develops gradually, and allows the development of larger amounts of more developed cells. In broader perspective, these more grown-up cells can achieve some of their typical functionality but due to the increase in the number of cells like white blood cells the blood flow may slow down and result in severe anemia. The leukemia is categorized in to four basic categories which are as follows:
•Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML)
•Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL)
•Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML)
•Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)
For acute leukemia following are the signs and symptoms of leukemia:
Fatigue or tiredness
Shortness of breath during physical activity
•Sluggish curing of cuts and excess bleeding
•Mild fever or night sweats
•Black-and-blue spots (bruises) for no evident cause
•Pinhead-size red spots under the skin
•Pale skin
•Low white cell counts
Aches in bones or joints
As far as chronic leukemia is concerned people with CLL or CML may not have any symptoms. Some patients learn they have CLL or CML after a blood test as part of a usual checkup. Occasionally, a person with CLL may see enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin and go to the doctor. The person may feel exhausted or short of breath or have frequent infections, if the CLL is more severe. In these cases, a blood test may show an increase in the lymphocyte count.A comprehensive blood count is utilized to make a diagnosis of leukemia. This blood examination may confirm high or low point of white cells and show leukemic cells within the blood. Sometimes, number of platelet and red cell are fairly low. Bone marrow tests like aspiration and biopsy are often carried out to verify the analysis and to glance for any chromosome irregularities. All these tests spot the leukemia and its cell category. These tests must be continued after regular intervals after treatment commences to gauge how sound the healing is.

Leukemia Cancer Treatment In the worlds

What is Leukemia ?
Leukemia can be classified as either lymphoid or myeloid, denoting the type of white blood cells affected. It is also categorized as either acute or chronic reflecting the speed of progression.
  • Acute Leukemia : Acute Lymphoblastic (lymphoid) Leukemia (ALL) accounts for more than 80% of cases of and one of the few forms of cancer that is more common in children than adults.
  • Chronic Leukemia:Chronic leukemia which progress slowly are very rare in childhood. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) accounts for less than 3% of childhood leukemia.
  • Causes of Leukemia
  • Radiation exposure : - Exposure to very high levels of radiation increases acute leukemia risk.
  • Exposure to benzene : - Exposure to the chemical benzene at work over a long period of time increases your risk of developing acute leukemia.
  • Smoking : -Smoking cigarettes can increase your risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia.
  • Genetic reasons : - Certain inherited conditions can increase the risk of developing acute leukemia.
  • Children with Downs syndrome are more likely to get acute myeloid leukemia than other children.
  • Family history : -Having a first or second-degree relative diagnosed with a blood cancer or lymphoma.
  • Past chemotherapy : -People who have had treatment with particular chemotherapy drugs in the past.
  • Blood disorders : -Bone marrow disorders called myelodysplastic syndrome, Fanconi's anaemia & diseases where bone marrow makes too many blood cells (myeloproliferative disorders).
  • Viruses : -Virus called HTLV-1 (human T cell leukemia virus) causes a rare form of adult T cell leukemia.
  • Electromagnetic fields : -Power lines produce 'low frequency electromagnetic radiation' (EMR), as do electric wiring and electrical equipment.
  • Exposure to infection and childhood leukemia
Diagnosis of Leukemia
Any diagnosis relies on a good medical history (the story of how the illness developed), a physical examination and special tests guided by the history and examination. Blood tests are important in the diagnosis of leukemia. A sample of blood is examined under a microscope to see what the cells look like and to determine the number of mature cells and blasts.

Treatment Leukimia in the World
Treatment for leukemia is complex. It varies with the type of leukemia, and it is not the same for all patients. The treatment depends not only on the type of leukemia, but also on certain features of the leukemia cells, the extent of the disease, and whether the leukemia has been treated before. It also depends on the patient's age, symptoms and general health.

Can ITP Blood Disorder Be Reversed and Platelets Increase Naturally?

If you have ITP blood disorder and are on prescription medications you are no doubt interested in keeping the side effects to a minimum. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to increase platelets naturally and get of off prescription meds all together? Well even in some of the more sever cases this is possible but even if not by boosting your over all health using natural methods you can reduce the meds you require and also reduce those nasty side effects. The extra bonus is that increasing platelets using natural methods can be cost effective. Many techniques require minor adjustments to your diet that are not expensive at all. Of course things are a bit different with my situation and maybe yours also. I have a pretty good health plan through where my husband works and so all prescriptions are covered but the plan will not cover any natural methods I use. Bummer! But I guess I can't complain. I have reduced my meds and have improved things with taking better care of what I eat and what I expose myself too. Eliminating as much stress as possible has helped also.At the very least ITP blood disorder can be curtailed if not completely reversed just by taking care of yourself using natural methods. It is really an eye opener when you realize that some of the things you have been doing in the past that you thought were good for your turn out to be detrimental to your platelet count in the long run.If you noticed, I use phrases like "curtailed" or "reversed" when talking about ITP blood disorder. I haven't said anything about "curing" ITP. That is because to date there is no cure. If you have ITP you are concerned with control of what your immune system is doing to your platelet count. If you can manage all the factors that contribute to your autoimmune dysfunction you will be able to curtail the destruction of your platelets and because your body is still producing them your counts will start to climb. In other words you are gaining more control over the "healing" aspects of your body, improving and enhancing them using natural methods over medications and at the same time eliminating habits that are detrimental to your platelet count.Healing will involve active participation and looking for restoration. This can involve the use of herbs, vitamins, diet, life-style and other natural therapies. Healing is dependent on discovering the laws of health that rule every cell of your body and obeying them. This means you will have to do some work and be personally responsible for your health. You will be the only one who can devote the required time and passion for your health and the discoveries of your own personal needs and requirements. So the answer to the question presented at the start of this article is a resounding YES! But it all boils down to You Have To Make It Happen. No one will do it for you. Good health to you.

What Is Sickle Cell Anaemia?

This year 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the published medical paper that first described the condition Sickle Cell Anaemia and the appearance of "peculiar elongated cells" in the blood sample of a patient when viewed under a microscope. Sickle cell anaemia, or sickle cell disease, is a disorder of the haemoglobin in the red blood cells, and at critical times, the cells that are normally disc shaped turn into a sickle shape with the added consequence of blocking the delicate blood capillary network.A sudden and profound anaemia can result and oxygen levels fall dangerously low in the body, and the sufferer can experience intense pain and a number of complications. Haemoglobin disorders that including both sickle cell disease and thalassemia, or Cooley's disease in the US are a significant global public health problem, partly because they are common and widespread. Sickle Cell Anaemia Education Project With the need for better education in mind, academic staff in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK have initiated a new project called SCOOTER "Sickle Cell Open - Online Topics and Educational Resources". SCOOTER is funded by the UK Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and it is part of a wider "open education" initiative run by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).SCOOTER is working with UK academics, health professionals, pharmaceutical industry and societies to release educational materials on the subject of Sickle Cell Anaemia and Thalassemia. The educational materials will be in a range of forms, from photographs and diagrams to more comprehensive learning objects - bite sized chunks of learning to even a complete text book. Other discussions are already taking place through Twitter, Facebook, Posterous and other Web 2.0 tools, and anyone interested can go to the project website and "follow" the SCOOTER project.Marking the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Sickle Cell Anaemia, the SCOOTER project will become established and invite people to participate through providing materials, reviewing resources and simply using and reusing them. SCOOTER will become a vibrant global community to address the educational needs and raise awareness of Sickle Cell Anaemia and Thalassemia around the world.

Know About Causes and Treatment of Blood Cancer

Blood cancer is an uncontrolled increase in the number of blood cells. To better understand blood cancer, you may need to know a bit more about blood cancer and leukemia. All blood cells are formed in the bone marrow from stem cells. A stem cell is the earliest stage of every blood cell. If a patient has blood cancer, the cancerous blood cells are either overproduced or simply live longer than normal. The stem cells may produce abnormal cells that do not function properly.
Causes
There are several causes for blood cancer such as to much of radiation that common happen to people that have another cancer. the other causes of blood cancer is diseases that affect the immune system such as HIV. beside that blood cancer can causes by Contact with a chemical called benzene, one of the chemicals in petrol and a solvent used in the rubber and plastics industry and Genetic disorders like Fanconi anemia, Schwachman-Diamond syndrome and Down syndrome.A weakened immune system - this may be a result of drugs that suppress the immune system (such as those used for organ transplants), high doses of radiation (such as in radiotherapy for another cancer), or diseases that affect the immune system (such as HIV).Genetic disorders like Fanconi anemia, Schwachman-Diamond syndrome and Down syndrome.
Treatment
Garlic is a naturally powerful antibiotic that stimulates the immune system and effectiveness of white blood cells and T cells.Garlic is an extremely important natural resource to ensure optimal immunity and protection from germs. It also has extremely resourceful anti cancer properties. A low platelet count makes even minor abrasions serious. A low white blood cell count can turn a small cut into a starting point for a serious infection. Be gentle when brushing your teeth and blowing your nose.Biological therapy uses special immune system cells and proteins to stimulate the body's immune system to kill cancer cells. Biological agents such as interferons, interleukins, monoclonal antibodies, tumor necrosis factors and colony-stimulating factors are natural substances found in the body that help alter the way the immune system reacts to cancer..The Chinese consider licorice more important an herb than giensing. Licorice root essentially has a powerful potentiating effect on the human reticuloendothelial system, the primary line of defense against microorganisms.

What Are Blood Cancer And Natural Cure For Blood Cancer

Blood cancer is a condition where cancerous cells have attacked the blood, bone marrow or lymphatic system. This type of cancer is malignant and has the ability to spread and destroy tissues. In the case of leukemia, the cancer interferes with the body's ability to make blood. Leukemia attacks the bone marrow and the blood itself, causing fatigue, anemia, weakness, and bone pain.
It is diagnosed with a blood test in which specific types of blood cells are counted. Treatment for leukemia usually includes chemotherapy and radiation to kill the cancer, and in some cases measures like bone marrow transplants may be required. There are several different types of leukemia, including chronic myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and hairy cell leukemia.
Symptoms of Blood Cancer:
• Weakness, Fatigue, Malaise and Breathlessness
• Excessive or easy bruising
• Bleeding gums or frequent nose bleeds
• Recurrent infections or fever
• Excessive sweating of body during night
• Weight loss
• Frequent vomiting sensations
• Anorexia
• Lumps or abdominal distension due to enlarged abdominal organs
• Delirium and confusion
• Headaches with occurrence of visual difficulties
• Decreased urination and difficulty while urinating
Natural Cure for Blood Cancer:
  • Chemotherapy: There are several types of chemotherapy, and each has worked for some people as a real cure even for some with advanced blood cancer. Systemic chemotherapy entails injecting drugs into one's bloodstream or ingesting through the mouth to disperse it through the patient's body to fight a cancer that has spread (metastasized) beyond the organ in which it began.
  • Watch for the symptoms of blood cancer in order to aid in the early diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Common symptoms include high fever and chills, frequent infections, swollen lymph nodes, tiny red spots on the skin, easy bruising and extreme tiredness.
  • Diet is also considered a very important part of treatment. Visiting an ayurvedic practitioner is important in order to develop the proper diet for your body. The practitioner will determine which of the three humors is the predominant one in your body, and then based on this information, can develop a diet for you that will bring the three humors back in balance.
  • Raw Foods:One way that breaks with traditional cancer cures is through changing the diet into nothing but raw foods. Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover, a proponent of natural cancer cures, suggests that raw diets are easier for your body than chemotherapy. He also says that people should maintain a raw diet until cancer is in remission, because cooked foods exacerbate cancer cell growth, while raw food is still alive and will fight cancer cells.
  • Consider radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy. It involves the use of high powered beams like gamma rays and X rays to focus on the malignant cancer cells. Radiotherapy is typically administered in a hospital and may be used in combination with surgery and chemotherapy or may be administered alone.

Prevention of Blood Cancer

Leukemia or leukaemia (see spelling differences) is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow and is characterized by an abnormal proliferation (production by multiplication) of blood cells, usually white blood cells (leukocytes). Blood has different components sch as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. The red blood cells (rbc), platelets also called monocytes because it is belong to the "myeloid" group and other white blood cells belong to the "lymphoid" group. Lymphoid cells are affected. Disease progresses quickly. Blood cancer or Leukaemia is actually a group of diseases, each of which impede with the normal functioning of blood cells and progressively weaken the system.leukaemia is classified as either Acute or Chronic. Blood and urine samples may also be tested for various substances, called tumor markers, which may indicate cancer.Tumor markers are typically chemicals made by tumor cells, but tumor makers are also produced by some normal cells in your body. Lymphoid cells are affected. Disease progresses over a long period.Usually affects adults, more men than women.Myeloid cells are affected. Disease progresses over a long period of time. Causes of Blood Cancer

1. Exposure to radiation.

2. Exposure to chemicals.

3. Human T-cell Leukaemia Virus (HTLV)

4. Genetic factors (chromosomal abnormalities).

Symptoms of blood cancer
1. Tiredness.

2. Bleeding.

3. Bruising.

4. Fever.

5. Weight loss.

Treatment of Blood Cancer

Chemotherapy is destroy the abnormal cancer cells. This involves a bone marrow or a stem cell transplant.Stem cell transplant involves transplanting stem cells (the most basic type of cell, from which all types of blood cells develop), rather than bone marrow cells. Bone marrow or stem cell transplants allow much higher doses of chemotherapy to be given. Leukemia is a broad term covering a spectrum of diseases.Leukemia is clinically and pathologically split into its acute and chronic forms.Acute leukemia is characterized by the rapid proliferation of immature blood cells. This crowding makes the bone marrow unable to produce healthy blood cells. Acute forms of leukemia can occur in children and young adults.Chronic leukemia is distinguished by the excessive build up of relatively mature, but still abnormal, blood cells. Typically taking months to years to progress, the cells are produced at a much higher rate than normal cells, resulting in many abnormal white blood cells in the blood. Chronic leukemia mostly occurs in older people, but can theoretically occur in any age group. natural or artificial ionizing radiation.possible cause:
natural or artificial ionizing radiation
certain kinds of chemicals
some viruses
genetic predispositions
Leukemia, like other cancers, result from somatic mutations in the DNA which activate oncogenes or deactivate tumor suppressor genes, and disrupt the regulation of cell death, differentiation or division. Cohort and case-control studies have linked exposure to petrochemicals, such as benzene, and hair dyes to the development of some forms of leukemia.Viruses have also been linked to some forms of leukemia. For example, certain cases of ALL are associated with viral infections by either the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, responsible for AIDS) or human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1 and -2, causing adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma).Fanconi anemia is also a risk factor for developing acute myelogenous leukemia.Until the cause or causes of leukemia are found, there is no way to prevent the disease. Cancer Prevention Measures
Enzymes to Dissolve Cancers
Dissolving cancerous tissue requires enzymes. Dietary supplements containing the ten or more pancreatic enzymes are helpful, with the most important enzymes being trypsin and chymotrypsin. These enzymes dissolve the protein coat of the cancer cell making it vulnerable to the attack of white blood cells. Pineapple and papaya are good sources of enzymes. Once the enzymes have dissolved the protein coating of the cancer cells, the white blood cells are able to recognize them as foreign cells.
Dietary sources of all kinds of enzymes are useful. The consumption of at least 70% fresh foods vs. 30% cooked foods helps ensure a supply of enzymes for the body (cooking at temperatures above 120ยบ F destroys enzymes in the food).

Hematological malignancy is known as blood cancer

Blood cancers affect the production and function of your blood cells. Blood cancers, on the other hand, are cancers found in the blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes or lymphatic tissue. There are three kinds of blood cancer: leukemia- is a type of cancer found in your blood and bone marrow Lymphoma- is a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system: Multiple myelomais a type of blood cancer that specifically targets your plasma cells. A common result of blood cancer is too much or too little blood.
Signs and symptoms:
• Weakness
• Fatigue, Malaise
• Breathlessness
• Minimal body strain results in-bone fractures
• Excessive or easy bruising
• Bleeding gums or frequent nose bleeds
• Recurrent infections or fever
• Excessive sweating of body during night
• Weight loss
• Anorexia
• Lymph node (gland) enlargement
• Lumps or abdominal distension due to enlarged abdominal organs
• Abdominal pain
• Bone pain and Back pain
• Bone fractures from minimal trauma
• Confusion
• Delirium
• Headaches with occurrence of visual difficulties
• Abnormal bleeding in gums nose and cuts, which will result in platelet reduction
Fluid retention
• Decreased urination
• Occurrence of fine rashes on dark spots
• Swelling in the neck, underarm, or groin.
• susceptibility to infections
Treatment:
The treatment depends upon the age and kind of blood cancer.
• Chemotherapy
• Radiation
• Stem Cell Transplants
• Autologous Transplants
• Peripheral Transplant
• Allogeneic Transplant
• Biological Therapy
• Monoclonal antibody therapy
• Antibiotics for infections
• An anti-cancer drug called Velcade (bortezomib)
• Medication
As with the new technologies and treatment many people survive the blood cancer. Blood cancers are more common in adult then children. Determining the stage of cancer actually means gauging its extent. You should check your stage of blood cancer so it will help you to treat easily. Regularly do check up your blood and do your blood test at regular interval.

Blood Sugar and Cancer

Blood sugar has been linked to the cause of a variety of different cancers. High insulin levels promote and environment that makes it much easier for certain tumor to grow. Research and testing is still being done so it is very hard to make any kind of bold statements regarding blood sugar levels and cancer. However, there is cause for great concern with certain cancers.
Colon and Rectal Cancer
In a Harvard University study that involved more than 50,000 middle aged men, those whose diets were most likely to raise blood sugar fast and high were 32 percent more likely to develop colon and rectal cancer over 20 years.
Breast Cancer
In the Women's Health Study, women who followed a blood sugar-boosting diet were 135 percent more likely to develop breast cancer in seven years than woman whose diets were more blood sugar friendly. Many different studies have shown a huge increase in breast cancer in women that do not follow a blood sugar friendly diet.
Endometrial Cancer
In the Iowa Women's Health Study, which involved more than 23,000 post-menopausal women, those who didn't have diabetes and followed blood sugar-spiking diets were 46 percent more likely to get this cancer over 15 years. An Italian study that compared women who developed endometrial cancer with a similar group of women who didn't found a 110 percent increase in risk linked to this type of diet.An Italian study looked at men ages 46-74 who developed prostate cancer and compared their diets to a group of similar men who didn't get the cancer. Those whose diets were most likely to spike blood sugar were 57 percent more likely to have prostate cancer. A similar Canadian study found a 57 percent increase in risk.
Pancreatic Cancer
Even the organ that produces insulin maybe more prone to cancer if it's constantly bathed in that hormone. A study using data from the Nurses' Health Study over 18 years found that women whose diets raised blood sugar the most were 53 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than women whose diets raised it the least.

Information of Very Rare Blood Diseases

Being diagnosed with one of many very rare blood diseases can be scary and confusing. Sloan-Kettering was developed to help cancer patients, but also offers valuable information for a variety of very rare blood diseases. The site describes some rare forms of leukemias that many probably have never heard of. One such disease is Hairy Cell Leukemia, which attacks the cells that help create antibodies to fight infections. Signs of this disease include, abdominal pain, a low blood count, and the possibility of very rare infections, since the immune system is weakened so dramatically. Another rare form of blood cancer the site describes is Myleofibrosis, in which too much scar tissue is formed within the bone marrow. The presence of the tissue causes the red blood cells that pass through to be broken down.In addition to these very rare blood diseases, information is also offered on eosinophilia, where a high number of eosinophils, which are a form of white blood cells, are present in the blood. Eosinophilia is not particularly a disease, but more a reaction to one. The body creates these extra cells to fight off an allergen, infection, or intrusive parasite, perhaps. This disease starts with the mutation of stem cells in the bone marrow, which then causes red blood cells to break down as they pass through. This disease is treated in the same manner as aplastic anemia, but with a more aggressive approach. Other very rare blood diseases include different types of hereditary anemias, idiopathic edema, congenital heart block, hereditary lymph edema, and vitamin B12 deficiency. These are just to name a few on the extensive list that is offered at bloodbook dot com. The site names a wide array of rare diseases and disorders that effect the blood, and gives a link to more information that is available on each disease. This site may be exceptionally helpful to any one who has been diagnosed and is looking for more clear information on a particular disease.

What Is the Connection Between Leukemia and Cord Blood Treatments?

Leukemia is a type of cancer that begins from those tissues in the body that form blood. It is basically the cancer of the blood and marrow, and leads to a reduction of white blood cells in the body. The treatment that has to be provided for leukemia should be such, that it would increase the amount of White Blood cells in the blood stream. For people who are suffering form leukemia, the great news is that is can be provided effective treatment with the help of cord blood.Cord blood is blood that is obtained from the umbilical cord at the birth of an infant. This blood remains in the placenta and the umbilical cord that is left unattached just when the baby is born.Cord blood is known as a source of stem cells, as they are present in it in great number. Stem cells are basically obtained from an embryo, which may be a concern for some people regarding ethics. However, it does help in providing a great solution to the disorder, leukemia. The ability of stem cells is to change and transform into any other cell or tissue in order to cure and repair the damaged ones. This is one reason why it can be used to cure leukemia. The process by which cord blood is used to cure leukemia takes place when this blood is obtained from a mother who has just given birth. The person who is suffering from leukemia is then given a high dose of chemotherapy, and the stem cells start carrying out their function of replacing the damaged cells. The real treatment takes place when the patient is infused with stem cells, which start producing white blood cells in order to make the amount of white blood cells reach the normal number. Thus, cord blood obtained at birth can be stored to be used whenever required.
